CANONSBURG CHAPTER NEWS

Our Chapter pledged to donate the Icon/Chancel Screen to be placed in the Saint Phanourios Chapel at All Saints Church in Canonsburg. We also donated funds to help sponsor our 25th of March Celebration and booklet (click here).

  1. Our Chapter is sponsoring an Artoclasia on March 7th in honor of the "Ensomatosis" at All Saints Canonsburg. I am also providing a short article on the subject to be included in our church bulletin for the edification of our members.
  2. We also voted to hold a fundraiser in the fall for the Rhodian scholarship program in conjunction with Outback Steakhouse.
  3. Below is the update info that I sent to Stanley after our Feb 15th meeting below.
  4. Our next meeting will be on the 10th of May.

The following highlights were discussed at our 2-15-2009 meeting.

Sam Kakiou - 1931 - 2008

Samuel T. Kakiou, 77, of Hopewell Township, passed away Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, in The Medical Center, Beaver.

Born Nov. 25, 1931, in Farrell, Pa., he was a son of the late Stamati and Marietta (Nicklou) Kakiou. Mr. Kakiou was a 1950 graduate of Aliquippa High School and attended Geneva College until his enlistment in the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean War. Sam began his career with the U.S. Postal Service in 1955 as a clerk/carrier and retired in 1992 as the Postmaster of Glenwillard. He was an active member of Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Aliquippa, where he served as secretary of the Senior Citizens. He was past president of the Order of AHEPA Lodge No. 400 and treasurer to the Pan-Rhodian Society Lodge No. 5. Mr. Kakiou was a member of the Beaver County ASA Umpires Association, PIAA Softball Officials, Celtic Reds Athletic Club, and formerly served on the Hopewell Township Sewer Authority.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Elizabeth (Trump) Kakiou; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Tara Kakiou, Center Township; three daughters and son-in-law, Margaret Mayhue, Hanover; Helen and Jeff Kairis, Moon Township, and Sandy Kakiou, Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren, Carly and Sam Mayhue, Kyle, Kaila and Kelsie Kakiou, and Rachel and Marissa Kairis; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Koula Kakiou, Aliquippa; his loving cousins, Lyne, Tula and Marguerite Kakiou; a goddaughter, Patricia Rader, Falls Church, VA., and many nieces, nephews and numerous relatives in Rhodes, Greece.

Friends will be received today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the TATALOVICH FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 2205 McMinn St., Aliquippa, www.tatalovichfuneralhome.com.

Mr. Kakiou will lie in state Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. in Kimisis Tis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church, 2100 Davidson St., Aliquippa. Father Christopher Bender, his pastor, will officiate.

Interment will follow at 12:15 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Aliquippa, where the Beaver County Special Unit will conduct military honors.

Trisagion (blessing service) will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

AHEPA Lodge No. 400 will pay their respects by gathering Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home for a memorial tribute.

News from Chapter 9 as of 12-18-2008

  • Congratulations to Marissa and George on their engagement. Marissa is the daughter of George and Carrie Koupiaris from Warren, members of our Chapter. George is the son of Tasso and Nikki Kalantzis from Canton, Ohio. A first class engagement ceremony was held on 11-15-2008 which was attended by friends and relatives. Wedding date is set for the Columbus weekend next year at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Warren.
  • Congratulations also to Eleni Fantidis and Jeffery High for their engagement. Eleni is the daughter of Nick and Anna Fantidis. A classy reception followeed and it was attended by many friends and relatives. Nick and Anna, even though they are not Rhodians, they are good friends and supporters of our Chapter. Anna with her children Kosta and Eleni are both members of our Chapter. Wedding date is set for a later date.
  • A Christmas party was sponsored by our Chapter 9 on 12-13-2008 and attended by about 80 Rhodians. The food was good and the brotherly atmosphere made it very enjoyable.
  • The Rhodians of Warren sincerely wish PARESTIKA to brother Rhodian Mike Hatzis for his brief recent hospitalization. he is home and well under recovery.
  • We all wish Tasso and Maritsa Anastasiadi on the occasion of the purchase of their new home NA EINAI KALORIZIKO and to enjoy their new Rhodian and other Greek neighbors.
  • A nice surprise came back from Rhodes. An anniversary party was given for Taso and Maritsa Anastasiadis by their daughters Anissia and Dorathea with relatives and friends invited.
  • Also congratulations to Nick an dDorothy Cuccuras for the marriage of their granddaughter. The wedding took place in Rhodes this past summer and was attended by many Rhodian relatives from Warren.

  1. The 81st National Convention held in Aliquippa, Pa has elected the following Supreme Officers for the year 2009. President-Polyvios Pavlidis from Chapter # 8 Warren, Ohio Vice-President-Steve Palardis from Chapter # 25 Union New Jersey Secretary-Christina Kapolis from Chapter # 8 Warren, Ohio Treasurer-Bill Angelis from Chapter # 8 Warren, Ohio The newly elected officers are always ready to assist its members. Please do not hesitate to contact us if a question or situation should arise.
  2. We are happy to announce that the delegates at the 81st Pan-Rhodian Society Convention voted to award scholarships to the following College / High school students.

    Emmanuel S. Alexander, Alexandra A. Antonas, Nicole Marie Averell, Panayiota M. Pahoulis, Kelly Lynn Osterrieder, Alyssa Susanne Loutsion, Lisdsey M. Scoumis, and Victoria M. Capranica.

  • Two members of the Supreme Lodge, President Polyvios Pavlidis and Treasurer Bill Angelis visited the mother lodge, Chapter # 1 Hartford CT, and attended the general assembly on November 16th. The other two officers, Steve Pelardis and Christina Kapolis were not able to attend due to other commitments.
  • The energetic and dynamic officers of chapter # 1 Mike Troulas, Savas Papageorge, Rania Menoutis and Barbara Sorosiak and members of the Hartford chapter have attended Church service in the morning and a delicious lunch after the meeting.
Both S.L. officers like to thank chapter # 1 for their Rhodian hospitality
